What is Hairpinest?

Hairpinest is basically Happiness. Someone has already used the word Happiness which resulted in me exercising my very little creative juices. Since this is the first entry of my blog, i will make clear my objectives. 1) to write 2) to write about happiness 3)to be happy writing about happiness. Of course I will try to add in stuff that are totally irrelevant but let me indulge myself for now.

So, what is happiness?

Super difficult question. It’s just like asking what’s the meaning of yellow? Or the word ‘”the”. I Feel like giving the you-know-what-i-mean answer but then I might as well don’t type. I don’t have the best answer but maybe one can try to answer this question by looking at the commonalities of different experiences of happiness from different people. It seems to follow the following model:

The commonalities of human’s experience with happiness seems to lie in these two factors

1)the present pleasure that we get from the activity we pursue currently and

2)the meaning we give to the activity. So for example, eating ice-cream is very pleasurable now but not very meaningful to my future. While going for a jog might not be pleasurable at all during the activity itself but is a source of happiness once one finishes the run and perceives of the future healthy benefits.

The calibration of these two variables results in 4 broad kinds of emotions

Nihilistic emotions simply means living life without hope and pleasure while hedonistic ways of life can be seen from people who focuses totally on the present with no regards to the future. Personally, I don’t know of anyone who lives a life of total Ultimate Happiness or Nihilism. We seem to live our lives with varying amounts of each quadrant at different times. A happy life seems to be those who seeks to minimize the other emotions and maximize the amount of ultimate happiness one gets. The ultimately happy person (at the given moment) seems to be people who enjoy what they are doing now and what they are doing brings a sense of meaning to their lives.

Yet, I also noticed that an emotion once felt in a quadrant can slowly evolve into another emotion A person who perseveres well enough in his career might grow to enjoy it, while another who leads a hedonistic lifestyle might soon drop into nihilism, despairing about the so-called pleasures he enjoyed.

Next post I will try to look at whether humans truly have a happiness problem or could it be a self-created one
